Jazz

September is to me the most interesting of months. It follows on from the heat of summer and can bring us toasty days with cool evenings …….. and sometimes the evenings can be pretty toasty too! Later on, the weather starts reminding us that autumn is almost here. And we all know what comes after that! In September it starts getting late early, as the baseball icon Yogi Berra used to say. It’s a month with a lot of character! Our schedule for Resto Gare’s “Jazz at the Station” this September has a lot of character too!! We have five terrific weeks for you with more of the best in Winnipeg jazz!

Can’t get any closer to the start of September than the 1st! We’ll have the outstanding trumpet player Darren Ritchie as our guest at Resto Gare. Darren has been a key soloist with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra and is never less than exciting and inventive. Darren has a strong connection with the great legacy of jazz trumpet players like Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brown …… we like to think of him as being a be-bopper at heart!

On the 8th we feature a newcomer to our jazz lineup as Connor Darraugh will be making his initial appearance. If you’ve been spending time with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra over the last year or so Connor’s name may be familiar to you. He’s been heard with the band on both saxophone and piano and will be featured on alto sax on the 8th. Connor is an impressive young talent and we hope this will be just the first of many appearances for him at Resto Gare!

The Brian Chipney/Chenoa McKelvey Duo will be with us on September 15th.  While somewhat different in age, these two musicians each have a particular affinity for the sounds of the Swing Era and the styles that pre-date swing. True mainstream musicians who respect ALL that jazz has to offer! Brian of course will be on soprano saxophone with Chenoa on guitar. They both like to sing a song now and then too.

We haven’t had the pleasure of The Burtons’ company for a couple of years, thanks to covid, but we’ve very pleased to welcome them back to Resto Gare on the 22nd! The husband-and-wife team of Adelle on vocals and Rob on guitar always provides a tasteful evening of excellent jazz.

We conclude September with singer Guylaine Maltais on the 29th. Guylaine is a native of Quebec City who specializes in bringing her listeners the sounds of Brazil. Her “Brazilian Vibe” will give us a touch of warm beaches and hot sun as we wind our way into Fall.

Starting in September Resto Gare returns to a two-hour music format, with groups appearing every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30. We’ll be out on the patio when we can, though with the evenings getting cooler our warm and intimate dining room will become ever more welcoming!

Reservations aren’t required at Resto Gare, but “Jazz at the Station” has been so popular this season that we do recommend them! There have been evenings when we had to turn people away due to a lack of space! To reserve your table or for further information, call us at 204-237-7072 or book online.

Join us in September for more memorable evenings of wonderful food and brilliant music at Resto Gare! And remember ……. always plenty of free parking alongside our historic train car!
