We had to wait for it, but it looks like summer has finally decided to pay us a visit. We’re going to take full advantage of July’s extended sunshine hours by giving you even MORE great music as part of Resto Gare’s “Jazz at the Station” series! Starting in July and continuing through August we’ll be featuring THREE hours of outstanding live jazz every Thursday! Winnipeg’s finest musicians will be playing for you on our beautiful patio, or in our elegant dining room on those nights when the weather forces us inside. We also have an extra special evening planned in July that you won’t want to miss!

Our summer season gets underway on the 7th as vocalist Karly Epp pays her very first visit to Resto Gare as a “headliner”. Karly spent time studying and working in New York as well as performing throughout North America. Karly is also a highly regarded member of the jazz community right here in Winnipeg, where she’s currently teaching at the University of Manitoba. Accompanying Karly will be the Karl Kohut Duo. Come on out and show Carly some of that Resto Gare love!

July 14th – We’re going to keep you in suspense on this one just a little bit longer! Read on for details ………..

July 21st will see another outstanding vocalist joining us. Rosemarie Todaschuk has been a favorite at Resto Gare since the very early days of “Jazz at the Station” and we’re always pleased to see her …… and especially pleased to hear her sing! Rosemarie loves to take her audience on a “sentimental journey” through a selection of classic songs.

Back in January 1978 I saw Benny Goodman play at Carnegie Hall. That was a big deal! It’s an even bigger deal that our next performer actually PLAYED Carnegie Hall!! Greg Gatien is an outstanding saxophone player whether he’s on tenor or alto. Formerly a regular with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, Greg is currently based in Brandon, where he’s Dean of the School of Music at Brandon University. That means we here in Winnipeg don’t get to hear Greg nearly as often as we’d like. Unless, that is, you come to Resto Gare on July 28th when Greg and his trio will be with us!

Okay, what’s so dad-blamed special about July 14th? Well, how ’bout …….. IT’S THE OFFICIAL 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF RESTO GARE’S “JAZZ AT THE STATION”!! We call it “The 15th on the 14th”! Time does fly when you’re having fun and the past 15 years have been a blast. On the 14th we’re going to take an evening to look back …….. and forward! We’ll be featuring a multi-generational jazz group that will honour the many outstanding players who’ve paved the way for the vibrant jazz scene we have today while also pointing ahead to the great music we can look forward to in the future. Resto Gare’s Music Director Brian Chipney will be with us on soprano saxophone. Steve Hamilton will be joining Brian on bass. Steve is a wonderful musician who has played with every jazz figure of consequence in Winnipeg, not to mention working with the WSO, WJO and many more. Representing the next generation of great players coming up we’ll have Kasey Kurtz on guitar and Christian Ilagan on tenor saxophone. Kasey is a graduate of the U of M jazz program while Christian graduated from Brandon University. They can both play and I know you’re going to enjoy making their musical acquaintance if you haven’t already. It will be a special night and we do hope you can join us!

“Jazz at the Station” will be getting underway at 6:00 p.m. every Thursday in July and we’ll be going till 9:00. The patio will be home whenever the weather allows, but on those nights when it insists on raining our dining room provides a welcome haven. Reservations aren’t a requirement, but they’re suggested. To reserve your table or to get further information you can contact Resto Gare at 204-237-7072. Always plenty of free parking alongside our historic train car! Join us every Thursday in July as we present three hours of great jazz each week including a special celebration of Winnipeg’s finest jazz series ……. Resto Gare’s “Jazz at the Station”!!

July 7 – Karly Epp/Karl Kohut
July 14 – 15th Anniversary Celebration with the Brian Chipney Quartet
July 21 – Rosemarie Todaschuk

Jazz evenings in June start at 6:30 and go through 8:30. When the weather is good we’re out on the patio. If that isn’t possible we move into the elegant dining room. Great jazz, rain or shine, and fabulous cuisine to match! Attendance has been strong again this season, so we suggest that you consider reservations to ensure that a table will be waiting for you! Call us at 204-237-7072 for reservations or for more information. Always plenty of free parking next to our historic train car! Join us for “Jazz at the Station”, every Thursday evening at Resto Gare!!
