Way back in 1962 the great trumpet player Freddie Hubbard wrote a waltz called Up Jumped Spring. We love that tune at Resto Gare. When spring jumps up for the first time each year, it means one thing …… jazz is right around the corner! Resto Gare’s “Jazz at the Station” will be back on May 15th to start its 17th season! From mid-May right through the end of September we’ll be presenting our strongest-ever lineup of Winnipeg jazz talent. Each Wednesday you can hear outstanding jazz ….. on our patio when the weather cooperates and in our dining room when the great outdoors leaves something to be desired on the night. May will get the season underway with three of your favorite duos.

On the 15th our Musical Director Brian Chipney will be appearing with Richard Boughton on piano. Richard is a member of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, though he plays trumpet in that group. He’s also an in-demand keyboard player, a regular with many of the leading bands in town. Chipney features the seldom heard soprano saxophone, an instrument not to be trifled with! It’s hard!! But after 40+ years Brian pretty much has the hang of it! The duo will be performing their usual mix of classic show tunes, blues, ballads and originals.

May 22nd sees two of our favorite folks back on the Resto Gare stage as Rosemary Galloway and Brad Lovatt will be with us. Rosemary is from Toronto while Brad is a Winnipeg native. Bassist Rosemary has had the opportunity to play and record with world-class musicians like Clark Terry and Doc Cheatham, to name just two of many. Brad is no slouch himself, an excellent pianist with credits including Jeff Healey, Wayne Newton (!) and Jose Feliciano.

Our final outing of May features the group Brazilian Vibe with Guylaina. She’s a Quebec native with a natural affinity for the authentic music of Brazil. She’ll team with guitarist Marcos Martins to bring you the sound of samba and bossa nova. They’ll be with us on May 29th.

The music gets underway each Wednesday at 6:30 and goes through 8:30. As mentioned, we love to be out on our patio and will be there at every opportunity. On those nights when that isn’t possible you’ll find our dining room to be a wonderful space for great listening. Needless to say, the food is outstanding either way. It’s a come-as-you-are atmosphere. If you feel like dressing up, groovy! If not, just throw something on and come on down. Reservations aren’t required but they never hurt! We’ve had many nights over the years where we had big crowds and were forced to turn people away. Call us at 204-237-7072 to reserve your table. Always plenty of free parking next to our historic train car! We’ll look forward to welcoming you back for season seventeen of Resto Gare’s “Jazz at the Station”!      Yours truely Brian Chipney
